Are you sick of self-care?

Hey Reader

Are you super over this whole self-care movement?

Maybe you're a mom like me and you simply don't have the luxury to book a monthly massage or bi-weekly facial. (Or like, sleep.)

Or perhaps you're scrambling just to fill the fridge on a regular basis so the budget just doesn't allow for bougie hair care or a cabinet of holistic remedies.

But, does self-care only include those things?

I saw a post recently that really sparked my curiosity around this whole idea:

Where mothers especially are being gaslit into thinking that self-care is the key to their sanity-not addressing systemic issues like lack of postpartum support, the bounce-back body myth or the fact that mamas are expected to tend to the house, breastfeed, gently parent and have a successful career all whilst remembering to self-care!

This creator pointed out that it's unfair to convince a generation of caretakers that all they need is a little more elusive time to themselves to put up their feet up for a hundred-dollar pedi.

And I felt that. Deeply.

Also, I considered another angle.

I know that personally I used to be super triggered by this push on social media around self-care. As I dug deeper into why this bothered me so much, I realized it debunked one of my core wounds,

"My needs don't matter."

If I took better care of myself, then I'd be at direct odds with the story of my subconscious. So, that's tough.

To be honest, self-care for me looks a lot more basic than spa day or ladies' night.

I struggle to convince myself just to wash my face or move my body on the daily. That's embarrassing to admit, but it's true.

I share all this to say, yes, many of us don't live in a world where this elevated idea of pampering is even remotely possible.

And, also, maybe we're over-glamorizing this entire self-care concept.

Maybe we just need to get back to the basics like drinking more water, brushing our teeth twice a day or sending silly memes to friends.

Perhaps, what we really need are gentle reminders to ourselves that we do matter. Our needs to matter. And we can trust ourselves to show up and meet those needs on the regular.

Please, do share, what comes up for you around self-care? I could totally just be Sensitive Suzy over here LOL but I hope this resonates in some way or another!
